Fairer Westminster

Our vision is to create a Fairer Westminster that celebrates its communities, led by a council that combines social justice with efficient services for both our residents and our businesses.

As part of our commitment to be as open as possible about the work we continue to do, we’ve published our Fairer Westminster Delivery Plan for 2024-25. This sets out what we’ve planned for the next year and beyond across five areas: communities, housing, economy, the council itself – and the environment.

In order to provide a fairer environment, we’re tackling the Climate Emergency head-on, aiming to be a net zero council by 2030 and a net zero city by 2040. We’re taking steps to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency across our housing and buildings, reducing air pollution from contractor activity and reducing waste and increasing contractor contribution to urban greening and biodiversity. Initiatives and results so far include:

  • Improve the quality of homes in the city by investing £50m in Westminster’s housing stock across a range of projects
  • Reduce vacant homes in the city by creating an Empty Homes  toolkit to assist property owners in bringing problematic empty properties back into use
  • Providing nearly 500 residents with jobs and apprenticeships via Westminster Works
  • Expanded the network of dockless e-bike bays to 360 spaces making it the largest in the country
  • Pioneering developments the UK in electric vehicle infrastructure with 2,480 electric vehicle charging points installed so far the highest number in the UK
  • Invested £350,000 to improve our green spaces by supporting 30 projects through the Greening Westminster Fund and were awarded 27 Green Flag Awards

Sustainability

The Sustainable City Charter is a voluntary business and public sector partnership and puts in place a framework for climate and sustainability action relating to buildings across Westminster. In joining the Charter, participants will be making a public commitment to delivering improvements to their buildings across a range of key environmental themes. The Charter will evolve over time and may expand to cover wider topics such as social impact, air quality and biodiversity to support a sustainable low carbon city.
